Steven Law's latest book is Gone. Encounters with Awe, Wonder and Reverence While Exploring the American West (Middle Creek Publishing, 2024).

It's a collection of essays about rafting the Grand Canyon, backpacking in Utah, snowshoeing in Yellowstone, sea kayaking in British Columbia, surfing in California and fishing in Utah. As the title hints, the book focuses on times when the author found himself touched by the magical moments he found while exploring the natural world.

Polished is a collection of poems born from years exploring and wandering the wild trails and rivers of the Colorado Plateau.  Collectively, the poems paint an exuberant, image-rich story of a curious, observant young man seeking moments of wonder and beauty in his wild back yard. Sometimes reverent, sometimes joyful; always colorful and vivid.

PRAISE FOR GONE

“Steven Law is an observant and lyrical writer who evokes the wilderness experience in clear clean prose that is sometimes amusing, sometimes profound, and always delightful.”

-Tim Cahill, author of Pecked to Death by Ducks, and founding editor of Outside magazine

“For more than thirty years, the poet and outdoorsman Steven Law has wandered the wildlands of the American West, brought home stories, and burnished them to the high sheen of stream-polished pebbles that have been carried all the way from the mountains to the desert. This marvelous anthology is studded with gemstones of every shape and hue, each unique and beautiful in its way, all of them refracting the sensibility of a gifted writer with an eye sharpened by nature’s sublimity, an ear for the music and cadences of language, and a heart as big as the landscapes he celebrates.”

-Kevin Fedarko, author of The Emerald Mile and A Walk in the Park

In the style of a good campfire yarn, Steven Law’s Gone wanders the deserts, canyon, waterways, and shorelines of the American West with an eye for wonder a voice full of humor, and a never-ending thirst for the elusive moments of spiritual transcendence that only occur in the wild. Budding backpackers, kayakers, surfers, anglers and river rafters will love this book.”
